Extreme Rules (2016) was a professional wrestling pay-per-view (PPV) event produced by WWE. It will take place on May 22, 2016 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. It was originally scheduled on May 1 at the Allstate Arena in Rosemont, Illinois, but switched places with Payback. It will be the eighth event under the Extreme Rules chronology. The WWE released a statement on April 13, 2016 recommending from this event onwards children under 14 are recommended not to come to events as they will be returning to the TV-14 rating.
A total of nine matches were contested at the event (including one on the pre-show). In the main event Ana Sanchez defeated Melissa 3–2 in a 60-minute Iron Man match for the WWE Women's Championship. After the Intercontinental Championship match Seth Rollins returned to attack Roman Reigns.
The main event between Sanchez and Melissa was praised for its technical wrestling scoring a five-star rating whereas a 4.75 rating was given to the match between The Brothers which was praised as one of the most hardcore matches in wrestling history.
